Cymatics (from Greek: κῦμα "wave"), also known as modal phenomena, is the study of visible sound and vibration, typically on the surface of a plate, diaphragm, or membrane. Early experiments in this field were carried out by Dr Hans Jenny, the leading researcher in Cymatics – Cymatics being the interaction of vibration and matter. This is basic “standing wave” phenomena. A simple experiment demonstrating the visualisation of cymatics can be done by sprinkling sand on a metal plate and vibrating the plate, for example by drawing a violin bow along the edge, the sand will then form itself into standing wave patterns such as simple concentric circles. Hans Jenny, the Swiss medical doctor and natural scientist, coined the phrase Cymatics for the study of wave phenomena and vibration that shows the transformational nature of sound. It is typically associated with the physical patterns produced through the interaction of sound waves in a medium. Also, a single cross section is influenced laterally (the plate does not fly apart), so it can be tricky to calculate exactly what the pattern will be if the distance from the source of vibration is not uniform. €Cymatics is the study of wave phenomena. The work deploys Cymatics – the study of wave phenomenon and visible sound and vibration – to visualise the traditional folk melody of the Senhora do Almurtão as dynamic and shifting patterns on the surface of the adufe. Cymatics: A Study of Wave Phenomena & Vibration, (Vols. [Caduceus] We live in a vast ocean of sound, whose infinite waves ripple the shores of our awareness in myriad patterns of intricate design and immeasurably complex vibrations … permeating our bodies, our psyches, to the To those of us for whom 'seeing is believing', Cymatics, the science of wave phenomena, can be a portal into this invisible world and its myriad effects on matter, mind and emotions. Of anecdotal interest: the link to Hans Jenny's work, a pioneer in the field of cymatics. Volume 1, 1967 The structure and dynamics of waves and vibrations. And proudly drove home his first car. Those who have studied basic physics will recall that there are specific characteristic points on a wave–crests, troughs and nodes. CYMATICSA Study of Wave Phenomena and VibrationA complete compilation of the original two volumes by Hans Jenny. It was during my days at TED Global in Oxford, in the end of July 2009, during a talk by Evan Grant, that I discovered Cymatics - the study of wave phenomena and the effect of sound (vibration) on matter.
